In business and research, computer graphics are used in particular to visualize data. For example, measurement data from the CERN LHC particle accelerator is processed graphically in order to present it effectively in the media. An everyday application of this visualization through computer graphics is in medical technology, where computer graphics are used to create the most meaningful representations possible for imaging procedures such as computer tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These procedures produce a very large number of image slices, which can be analyzed individually. However, in order to obtain an overview, volume graphics can be used to create an overall picture. Volume graphics are particularly suitable for depicting objects that have no direct boundary to their surroundings, such as clouds or fog. This method achieves a high degree of optical realism by reproducing the transport of light.
In the elaboration, a possibility is explained how volume representations can be realized with the help of the graphics card (GPU). An additional focus is placed on protability in order to be able to be used on as many platforms as possible.
